Tracking Document Updates

Keeping a Last Updated date on published documents can help readers and team members know when the information was last reviewed. It also helps departments identify older documents that may need to be reviewed or updated.

Insert a Date That Updates Automatically

If you’d like the date to update automatically whenever the document is edited, you can insert it as a field.

  • On the Insert tab, within the Text group, click Date & Time.
  • Select the desired format and check the Update automatically box in the Date and Time dialog window.
  • When you click OK, today’s date is inserted as a field and will update automatically.

You will notice a faint gray box appear when you move your cursor over an inserted date field.

  • To edit the date: Click the gray box, type a new date, and then click outside the box.
  • To update the date to the current date: Click the date field and select Update.
