System Notification Tips & Best Practices
System notifications are designed to keep your computer secure, up to date, and running efficiently. They often include important security patches, system improvements, and hardware updates. While these prompts may sometimes feel disruptive, responding to them in a timely and thoughtful way helps prevent unexpected issues, protect your data, and ensure optimal performance.
Software Updates
Managed security and software patches for provisioned computers are typically scheduled for Wednesday mornings. Below are the recommended actions:
Before Rebooting
- Save or bookmark important browser tabs
- Close all applications properly before clicking “Reboot” to speed up the process
Choose the Right Time
- If prompted during work, select “Remind me in 60 minutes”
- It may work well to reboot during lunch or at the end of your workday (allow 10-15 minutes)
Don’t Wait Too Long
- You have up to 72 hours (3 days), but it’s best to act early
- Avoid forced restarts during meetings or important tasks
Dell Command | Update (DCU) Notifications
These updates contain feature enhancements and improvements to system reliability. They can usually wait unless you’re experiencing hardware issues. The best times to run Dell updates are before lunch or at the end of the workday (you can let updates run while you’re away).
Choose “Remind Me Later” If:
- You’re prompted during work and need more time
- You’re in the middle of important work
- You’re using battery power (some updates require AC power)
Choose “Install Now” When:
- You’re at your desk with AC power connected
- You have 15-20 minutes available
- You’ve reached a natural stopping point in your work
Troubleshooting
If an Update Takes Too Long (> 30 minutes):
- Be patient—some updates are large
- Do not force shutdown
- Contact IT if it exceeds 1 hour to complete updates
If Your Computer Won’t Boot After an Update:
- Wait at least 5 minutes on the Dell logo screen
- If still stuck, contact the IT Helpdesk
General Tips to Minimize Disruption
- End of the workday is a great time to run updates
- Keep important files backed up (e.g., OneDrive or network drives)
What NOT to Do:
- Don’t force shutdown during updates
- Don’t ignore notifications until a forced restart occurs
